United States v. Ezra Pound by T J Edwards

Saturday June 2nd, 3pm

No reservations required. FREE.

Every word true: his broadcasts, his trial, his poetry, the debate. A cast of ten tells the story of the only American artist to go on trial for treason against the United States. Dominic Cuskern stars in a reading on the life of the disaffected poet who turned to Fascism, broadcast from Italy, was arrested and imprisoned, rendered home to the U.S. for charges of treason, then thrown in a mental hospital for 12 years. The greatest English-language literary influence in the 20th century was sent to a hell-hole rather than face his crimes. This is the story and every word true, taken from first-hand accounts, broadcasts, trial transcripts, diaries, books and essays. You may think you know the story. You do not know the story.

by William Shakespeare
July 19-August 5, 2012

The country is in crisis. Diplomacy failing. Conflict certain. Leadership not. Enter the perfect soldier, a brilliant general with a noble heart, whose very honor blinds him to treachery. Can someone be completely moral or is virtue always suspect?

Shakespeare spotlights our innate distrust of goodness and the ways we seek to undermine and destroy it. Leaders, lovers, warriors, wives, we look for the flaw in goodness, expecting the dark side and more comfortable there. Othello’s tragic flaw turns out to be an absence of dark. He loves not wisely, but too well. Shakespeare gives us no comic relief in this brutal, bloody broth of villainy, prejudice and sexual jealousy, but with this tour-de-force challenge for two remarkable actors, we won’t miss it.

NOTE: This show is an addendum to the regular season and is not part of our subscription packages.

THE ENVELOPE by Jennifer Stafford
In this absurd dark comedy, Timmy and Mikey are strangers who meet when Timmy sees Mikey standing on the side of the road, holding out an envelope. Timmy, determined to escape his boring life, finds himself desperate to know what’s inside Mikey’s envelope. Mikey, with a secret mission of his own, just wants to be left alone. As the two argue, cajole, punch, faint, fake, and joke their way to getting what they want, they eventually find themselves wondering what it is that they’re actually trying to get from each other.

DINA by Jeff Sult
Eugene Schmidt, a single middle-aged man has travelled to Miami to find Dina, the love of his life whom he has not seen in 30 years.
AS CLOUDS BEFORE THE WIND by Peter Paulino
Mark realizes that his life is not what he had planned; he has sacrificed much for his family’s welfare at considerable cost to his own happiness. With dreams dashed, stuck in a job he hates, and reminded that others seem to have all the luck, Mark attempts to be successful one last time, but his luck holds. Based on a short story by John O’Hara.

THE GREATEST TRIBLATION OF THE HEART by Kate Bell
It is the hottest day of July. Janine, in a heartbroken haze, gets on the R train and ends up in an old man’s boozer in Queens. Unexpectedly, she finds the beginnings of her heart’s recovery in advice from Rory, Tom and Arnie, the bar regulars. A funny celebration of the kindness of the Outer Boroughs, the play explores the mystery and challenges of romantic love as they can be pondered only over a glass of Bud Light on ice.

SMILE & WAVE by Stephanie Staes
Rachel and Alex met weeks earlier at Alex’s first major gallery opening in SOHO. Ever since that event they have run into each other at random places all over New York. There is an attraction between them but they have not exchanged numbers for reasons that remain unspoken until one Saturday morning in a Manhattan park.

JENGA by Corey Pajka
Katie and James have just celebrated their two-year anniversary. They have moved in together and, much to their surprise, they have found out their brood is about to grow by one. When her two best friends from college come over for a game night, Katie’s past comes back to haunt her and possibly derail her future with James.

GINGERBREAD by D. L. Siegel
On the day of Cupcake’s audition to be a Radio City Rockette, Vinny struggles to build her a congratulatory gingerbread house. Set at the Talk of the Town Tavern on Staten Island, the play delves into the difficulty of being small town folk with the big city aspirations.

Box 2: June 7 – 10

Thursday-Saturday 8pm, Sunday 3pm

DIVORCE FIRST CLASS by Geoffrey Craig
Channing and Seth are in the midst of an amicable divorce. Their respective lawyers, however, turn up the heat and the notion of amicable goes out the window.

THANK EMILY by Richard Manley
Two women meet on a train. We learn in the course of their unpleasant conversation that a person can still enjoy poetry without the benefit of an academic explanation (and often in spite of it), and that one’s character is not necessarily a function of their credentials.

THE SENTINEL by Hal Corley
An enraged intruder has tried to gain access to an apartment on Gillie’s floor. Gillie calls on the recently moved in, dozing Mara to fill her in on the frightening commotion. As the two women’s contrasting backgrounds and values come to the fore in an intense showdown, we explore what constitutes privacy, and the still potent value of a good neighbor in today’s increasingly isolated world.

ANDREW: BASED ON A TRUE STORY by David Benger.
An elderly gentleman has been told that he has cancer and is refusing treatment.

WHAT ABOUT US by Brandon Marianne Lee
Two women show up for work. For one of them, this will be the last time. Both of them search for reason in their senseless and powerless situation.

VARIATIONS ON LOSING YOUR JOB by Corey Pajka, directed by David Gutmann
Losing a job, even a bad job, is upsetting. It’s a pain we have all experienced. But what if you had the chance to do it all again? How do yo approach the moment when you know you have nothing to lose? See this play and find out. Bring your weapon of choice.

Box 3: June 14 – 17

THE TIE THAT BINDS by Rebecca Sue Haber, directed by Heather Arnson
Amy and Jeff, a couple in their mid-twenties, arrive at a resort condo in Maine and romantically discuss their future. Shortly thereafter, Amy’s brother Scott shows up with his butch fiancée Jane. Scott and Amy’s parents (Mike and Maggie) arrive, dissatisfied with the condo and desperate for scotch. Maggie has recently received a diagnosis of cancer; her husband lacks emotional support and Amy tries to manipulate Jeff into proposing to her. As she attempts to force commitment, the “successful” relationships around her wax, wane and crumble to the ground. In the end she must rethink what she wants, what marriage means and whether or not a lifelong commitment to another person is even possible.

SUPERHERO BLUES by Judd Lear Silverman

This delightful staple of the musical theatre canon is about the adventures and misadventures of two sisters who move from small-town Ohio to the bohemia of 1935 Greenwich Village. Eileen is gorgeous, sweet and an aspiring actress with men falling at her feet. Ruth, while a gifted writer, is average, brazen and has a talent for repelling gentlemen callers. With a glorious score of swinging tunes by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Wonderful Town is the quintessential New York musical comedy about tackling your dreams and finding love in the most unexpected places. Winner of five Tony Awards in 1953 including Best Musical.

“A clear and radiant production, its message captivating, its characters sincere. Walter Lee Younger is vividly portrayed by Kwaku Driskell. Sameerah Luqmann-Harris’ performance of Ruth Younger was luminous in its fragility and quiet strength. A truly successful performance.” -Minda Larsen, TheaterOnline.com

This groundbreaking play set on Chicago’s South Side revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family. When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, her son, has other plans, however: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha, her daughter, dreams of medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face form the backbone of this seminal American drama about retaining one’s dignity within a harsh and changing world.

Music by Book by Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens,
January 28-February 19, 2012

“A Man of No Importance is one of the most unexpected pieces I’ve experienced in the theater for a long time. Much of that is due to the tender book by Terrence McNally, which is filled with loveable characters, charming wit, and emotional arcs. And not to mention the compelling score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, which so brilliantly captures the spirit and sound of neo-traditional Irish music. But the real surprise here is director Hans Friedrichs’s staging. Intertwining the musicians with the cast, he allows the show to reveal itself layer by layer. Every inch of Kate Rance’s scene design is used perfectly. I found myself eager to see the show unfold before my very eyes. Go see it – it’s a beautiful show.” -FiPS

“Skillfully directed and performed, this production by The Gallery Players deserves to have theatre fans crossing the bridge to glimpse this rare and special musical.” -Benjamin Coleman, Theatre Is Easy

“The Gallery Players are known for bringing out the best in musicals of a certain size – which they certainly do with this one. Under Hans Friedrichs’ resourceful direction, which includes John Doyle’s device of actors playing instruments, something that works wonderfully well here, [the actors are] all beautifully cast and in some cases outstanding. The Players have found a spectacular Alfie Byrne in Charlie Owens.” -Marc Miller, Backstage

This musical by the Tony Award®-winning team behind Ragtime tells the story of Alfie Byrne, a bus conductor in 1964 Dublin who is struggling with a secret he can’t even admit to himself. When he’s not driving his route, Alfie pursues his artistic passion and directs theatrical productions for a local troupe in a church hall. He is soon forced to confront his fears, shame and the bigotry of others. Winner of the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, A Man of No Importance is a tender and beautifully woven tale of family, friendship and acceptance, teaching us that it really is a wonderful thing to “love who you love.”

December 3-18, 2011

“Director Heather Siobhan Curran delivers up Reckless at the high level of professional entertainment typical of TGP. As an alternative to cheesier holiday fare, Reckless offers up generous portions of humor, senseless violence and gratuitous love. The play is also full of plot twists and surprises. However, it was no surprise to me that The Gallery Players continues their tradition of high-quality theatrical productions that are worth the trip to Brooklyn.” -Heather Lee Rogers, nytheatre.com

On Christmas Eve, Rachel is informed by her guilty husband that he has hired a hitman to kill her. Scrambling out the kitchen window into the snowy night, she embarks on a manic journey involving a deaf woman in a wheelchair (or is she?), numerous psychiatrists, a TV game show, and her own increasingly shaky sanity. Craig Lucas’ Reckless is a zany, comic, and ultimately poignant reflection on living in, and escaping from, the past.

“A bittersweet Christmas fable for our time. Reckless has an emotional pull akin to that of a Crosby ballad born of the lonely World War II home front.” —NY Times

One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a house-hold name thanks to a highly successful film version and a lively Motown rock ‘n’ roll score by the legendary songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Charming, tuneful, and hilarious, Little Shop of Horrors is campy, tongue-in-cheek fun.

First New York City revival.

Love will either cost Mitchell Green $200 an hour, or his entire Hollywood career…

Mitchell is on the brink of superstardom with the role of a lifetime, but something isn’t right. One lonely night, Mitchell hires Alex, a male prostitute, and unexpectedly falls in love. Cut to Diane, Mitchell’s power-player agent, who will stop at nothing to set Mitchell “straight” and keep him from making a decision that could derail both of their lives, and more importantly, their careers.

“Beane’s fast-moving, poignant tale of self-discovery is blessed with excellent timing, meaty roles, and scene-chewing dialogue. The humor quotient is off the charts [and] the story still manages to be heartbreaking.”-Winnie McCroy, EDGE

Three-time Tony® nominee Douglas Carter Beane’s “bitingly funny” play is a pull-no-punches look at the film biz, and what it takes to be a movie star when coming out of the closet is the farthest thing from being in.

“Mitchell’s embittered agent Diane (Maeve Yore) keeps you laughing until you realize she’s stuck a knife in your chest, and you can’t help but root for Ellen (Tania Verafield) – Alex’s lost on-again-off-again girlfriend who loves the young hustler.
