New York, NY—The Gallery Players, Brooklyn’s premier Off-Off Broadway theater, presents the first musical of its 40th Anniversary season: Urinetown, The Musical, Music & Lyrics by Mark Hollmann, Book & Lyrics by Greg Kotis. Directed by Tom Wojtunik, who directed last season’s sold-out run of Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out, Urinetown runs October 14 – November 5, 2006.
Originally directed on Broadway by Gallery Players alum John Rando, Urinetown is a brilliantly funny and engaging satire of musical theatre traditions with a Brechtian edge. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom.

Director Tom Wojtunik notes, “Although Urinetown remains one of the most inspired and riotous new musicals of the past decade, it’s incredible how much more relevant many of the issues in the show are today than they were just five years ago. Suddenly the idea of a society ravaged by ecological disaster has a whole new significance. “ Continuing the Gallery Players’ tradition of both reviving and reimagining favorite Broadway shows, this production sets the story in the 1970’s, which experienced an energy crisis strikingly similar to the one in the musical.
The original 2002 production of Urinetown won several Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Musical Score, and Best Direction of a Musical.
